Oct 14, 2001 product introduction
The MCX462, 423 and 478 series heat sinks are designed
exclusively for installation through the four holes
surrounding the processor socket.
The core heat sink of the new MCX series is identical
between model MCX462, MCX423 and MCX478. The only difference
resides in the usage of specific brackets for installation
with various types of processors. Each heat sink model is
fully upgradeable to any of the other two. Each model
is compatible with the following processors:
-
MCX462: for all current AMD socket A processors, including
TBird, Durons, with Athlon, Palomino, MP and XP cores.
-
MCX423: for IntelŪ PentiumŪ 4 socket 423 processors
-
MCX478: for IntelŪ PentiumŪ 4 socket 478 processors
What is new compared to earlier MC462 heat sinks?

|
-
MCX462: Fully compatible with all*
socket A motherboards compliant with AMD specs,
in single or dual CPU configuration. The new
patent pending geometry is such that it fits entirely
inside of AMD component height restriction zones. This
allows clearance for capacitors located in areas close
to the socket which are non height restricted by the
CPU maker. Click on picture below to enlarge:

The MCX478 installed on an Abit BL7 Motherboard
(*) for installation
through the four holes surrounding the processor socket. Some
socket A motherboards do not have this feature. Please consult
manufacturer specs.

As with the earlier MC462, this new generation heat sinks
is designed for extreme heavy duty operations. A quantum
improvement can be measured in terms of CPU overclocking,
and is achieved thanks to the following features:
-
New helicoid pin: The MCX462, 423 and 478 heat
sinks inherit our patent pending helicoid pin technology
from the MCX370 model, but with a significant change:
the pin diameter has been reduced from .125" (3.17mm)
to .093" (2.38mm). This allows to increase the
number of pins from 261 to 371, and results in a 50%
increase in surface area available for heat dissipation.
The thinner diameter also promotes a faster thermal
transfer due to the pin's reduced mass. This directly
translates into measurably higher CPU frequencies.
-
All three models ship in standard configuration with
a 68CFM 80x80x38mm fan rated at a noise level of 48.5
dBA. The fan must be connected to the power supply due
to its high current rating. It is equipped with a separate
tachometer output, and a fan guard.
-
Casual users are advised that the above fan was specifically
selected for it's high performance. For this reason,
all three models are available with an optional rheostat
to adjust fan speed, and noise control.
A very simple solution to a much publicized issue: noise.
Connect one end to the power supply, and the other end to
your fan: you can now adjust fan speed from 4900 rpm down
to 3900 rpm, thus reducing fan noise from 48.5 dBA to 39
dBA. The body of the rheostat can easily be mounted to the
back of the case. Item ref # RH70 can be found in
the socket coolers price list, and also in the accessories
section.
-
As a result of the new geometry, the fan now mounts
on brackets that are riveted to the base of the heat
sink. Any standard 80mm fan can be used, and all
three models are also available without fan. Brackets
are factory installed and non-removable.
