MCW6000
series Water Blocks

NEW LOOK, SAME GREAT PERFORMANCE:
NOW AVAILABLE IN GORGEOUS BLACK & CHROME TRIM

DISCONTINUED
|
Introduction
The MCW6000 waterblock is a heavy duty liquid
cooling solution for high-end microprocessors. Our engineering
team focussed on optimizing five essential design features: performance,
reliability, compatibility, convenience, and cost. This product
line aims at providing the best VALUE in the
industry.
Features & benefits
Performance:
- The inlet is centrally located to focus the
lowest temperature fluid over the hottest area.
- The precise location and diameter of the inlet
are calculated to optimize flow velocity and turbulence, thus
accelerating the convection heat transfer into the fluid.
- The waterblock base features a thin pin design
(281 pins). This geometry maximizes the surface area exposed
to the fluid, and promotes turbulent flow, both factors which
also contribute to enhance the convection heat transfer, while
exhibiting less overall flow restriction than competing designs
(1).
- The inlet and outlet are 3/8" in diameter,
allowing direct use of 3/8" internal diameter tubing (1/2"
OD) for good flow rates and reasonably unobtrusive tubing.
- The block is an all C110 copper construction,
to exploit the high thermal conductivity characteristics of
this metal.
Long term reliability: built to last
- "Monolithic" construction: the base
and housing are brazed together, assuring long term integrity
of the joint.
- The copper housing features an unlimited durability
compared to acrylic tops used in competing technologies
- The all copper construction eliminates galvanic
corrosion.
- 100% quality control at the assembly line level:
each block is factory tested to 25 psi (1.7 bars) to guarantee
zero defect.
Compatibility and upgradeability: one size
fits all
- The 2.5" x 2.5" form factor enables
the same block to be used with all current microprocessors in
the Desktop and Server markets
- The inlet and outlet are intentionally smooth,
to provide compatibility with quick-connect, and hose clamp
fittings.
- In many cases, the same block can be reused
with different classes of processors, by simply swapping retainer
plates, thus reducing the cost of ownership.
Convenience: "Plug-and-Play" installation
- The MCW6000 attachment mechanism is plug-end-play
and does not necessitate removal of the motherboard (except
Intel® Pentium® 4 LGA 775 processors)
- Each retention system has been engineered to
comply with Intel® & AMD® specifications, and optimize
both safety and ease of use during installation.
Cost: Exceptional value
- While the MCW6000 product line can be
regarded as "high end" from a performance standpoint,
the design and manufacturing process are mass production oriented
to foster economies of scale. This is accomplished without sacrificing
the essential performance and quality features demanded by high-performance
after-market and OEM users alike.

Compatibility & Retention mechanism
Hold-down plates available for Intel processors:
- For Intel® processors, the same hold-down
plate (part #SP4) is used for:
- Pentium® 4 (socket 478),
- Xeon (socket 603/604)
- Xeon
800Mhz system bus "Nocona " processor
- Available in Royal Blue, or Black

- For Intel® Pentium® 4 LGA775 processors
- Available in Royal Blue, or black:
Hold-down plates available forAMD processors:
- For the AMD® K7 processor (socket 462):
Duron®, Athlon® MP, and Athlon® XP, Sempron - Available in
Royal Blue, or black:

- For the AMD® K8 processor (socket 754,
939 & 940): Athlon 64 & Opteron
- Available in Royal Blue, or black:

PROCESSOR UPGRADE PATH:
Conversion from one version to another is extremely
simple, and only requires replacing the retention hold-down plate.
The MCW6000 water-block itself ships in two versions:
- a flat base, suitable
for Intel® Pentium® 4 (socket 478), Xeon (socket
603/604), and AMD® "K8" Athlon64 & Opteron
(socket 754 & 939/940) generation processors, and
- a "stepped"
base, suitable for Intel® Pentium® 4 (socket LGA
775), and AMD® "K7" Athlon XP, Sempron, MP &
Duron (socket 462) class products. The "step"
is necessary to provide clearance for Intel® LGA 775 and
AMD® socket 462 "keep-out" areas.
The following Matrix shows how the two water-blocks can be used
in combination with different brackets to provide compatibility
with various processors:
Examples of Installations:
|
MCW6000-A
for AMD® K7 (socket 462) processors
|

Uses Swiftech's tried-and-true spring
clips, which provide maximum safety to the exposed K7
core during installation

|
|
|
MCW6000-64
for AMD® K8 Athlon64 & Opteron
|
|
|
|
|
MCW6000-P
for Intel® Pentium® 4
|

Snaps directly into the stock retention
frame with 2 spring clips

|
|
MCW6000-P
for Intel® Pentium® 4 LGA 775
|
|
|
The MCW6000-775
ships with Swiftech's proprietary spring loaded retention
requiring motherboard removal for installation. The
MCW6000-775 fully complies with LGA775 thermal &
mechanical specifactions, and keep-out areas. Close-by
capacitors are not an issue.

|
|
|
MCW6000-PX
for Intel® Xeon (400Mhz system bus) processors
|
|
|
|
The
MCW6000-PX ships with Swiftech's proprietary spring
loaded screws (left) requiring motherboard removal for
installation, but can also be used with Intel® validated
retention clips (right), which do not require motherboard
removal.
|
|
MCW6000-NX
for Intel® Xeon "Nocona" (800Mhz system
bus) processors
|
|
|
|
|
| The MCW6000-NX
is designed for Intel® Xeon processors with 800MHz
system bus (mPGA socket 604), code named "Nocona".
It uses Intel's validated
CEK spring which provides tension to the assembly and is
supplied by motherboard vendors. The water-block hold-down
plate is the standard SP4 bracket, fitted
with nylon spacers and socket screws to bolt down to the
chassis (part # S604-N). The MCW6000-NX
fully complies with socket 604 thermal & mechanical
specifactions, and keep-out areas. |

Performance data
The MCW6000 was tested in our labs, and
is compared below to the earlier MCW5002 series of waterblocks:

The flow resistance of the MCW6000
is approximately twice that of the MCW5002, this is a consequence
of the turbulence enhancements at the inlet.

The effect of the enhanced turbulence
can be seen in the significant reduction in thermal resistance
at all flow rates.

When the waterblock thermal resistance
is plotted vs. the head loss, it is clear that even at lower flow
rates the performance of the MCW6000 is superior.

MCW6000 Specifications
|
Housing:
- The copper housing is stamped, and brazed
to the waterblock base.
- The surface is treated with protective
coating to minimize surface discoloration over time.
- 3/8" inlet and outlet tubes are
soldered to the housing.
- Each assembly is pressure tested to 25
psi (1.7 bars)
|
|
Base:
- The base is a one piece copper forging
made of C110 copper, featuring 281 thin pins.

- Two versions are shipped in order to
accommodate the various processor configurations:
- Flat
base, for Intel® Pentium® 4 (socket 478),
Xeon® (all versions) and AMD® "K8"
class processors.
- "Stepped
base" for Intel® Pentium® 4 (socket
LGA 775) and AMD® "K7" socket 462 generation
processor.
- Exceptional quality and attention
to details: the base is lapped flat to 0.0005",
and polished to near-mirror finish to promote optimum
thermal conductivity. Users are advised that while flatness
is strictly respected for providing the most significant
benefit to thermal interface, surface polish is a cosmetic
component and may vary slightly from one heatsink to another.
Re-lapping or polishing the copper base is never recommended.
