Is acne a blight on your life? You are certainly not alone as it a common problem experienced by many, both young and older people alike. Don’t blame yourself though as sometimes it has little to do with anything that you may or may not have done. Here are some of the reasons why acne may occur:

Testosterone – acne in teenagers is most likely triggered by heightened levels of the hormone testosterone and this happens during that already tricky time called puberty. It helps the growth and development in boys but if you’re a girl, don’t panic, just because you have this hormone doesn’t mean you’re going to sprout a beard or a deep voice! The hormone actually works to maintain your muscles and bone strength. The sebaceous glands, which produce oil, are really sensitive to hormones which makes them over produce sebum (oil) causing your skin to feel greasy. This could be one of the reasons for developing acne.

Women – acne in adult women is also caused by hormonal fluctuations and more than 80% of adult acne cases occur in women. Some women get acne just before a period, during the first trimester of pregnancy and also while having a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome. Smoking – this is a possible trigger of an acne flare up in grown ups due to the toxins being absorbed by the body and affecting the health of the skin.

Medications – some medications can disturb your body’s natural balance which in turn could cause acne. Such medications include steroid based medication and some antiepileptic medicines used in epilepsy treatment.

Cosmetics – some cosmetics may react poorly with a person’s skin but this is much less likely now as most products are tested so that they don’t cause spots and are labelled as non-comedogenic.

There are some things that you may have heard about acne that are flat out not true and these include:

  • You should pop pimples – tempting maybe but you risk pushing the bacteria further into the pore and as the immune system will react, you are more likely to be left with an acne scar. It is far better to apply ice to reduce inflammation and apply a medicated spot treatment.
  • Having acne means you’re unhygienic. This is so untrue so don’t listen to the haters. Whatever is going on is happening under the skin so has little to do with how many times you wash your face.
  • Acne is caused by a poor diet – research has found no evidence that diet plays any significant part in the development of acne. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is good for your whole body yes but having the occasional burger is not going to give you acne.
  • Acne is infectious – it most definitely is not.
  • Having sex can cause acne – most likely started by parents to convince teens to behave but again, whether you are active or not will have no bearing on your acne.
